Aura decking

It’s a decking system.

Aura™ Decking is not simply decking boards — it is a system that includes boards, trim pieces, finishing accessories and traditional hand and stair railings.

Installation

Aura™ decking is installed on a conventional pressure treated wood substructure. Always consult your local building code to ensure that the substructure meets requirements. You may need to slightly adjust the structure to accommodate for the optional bullnose piece or breaker board. To comply with ICC-ES requirements, joist application must be at 16″ on centre, however for maximum feel and performance Aura™ suggests joint installation of 12″ on centre.

When cutting Aura™, it is best to use a mitre saw, with a blade that has the least amount of teeth as possible. Cut through the material as quickly as possible. These instructions help reduce friction between the board and the blade, ensuring the material does not melt with the heat and motion.

When drilling through Aura™ material it is best to pre-drill all holes. This ensures that none of the material cracks during installation.

As Aura™ is composed of 100% plastic material, the product does expand and contract with changes in temperature. To ensure there is enough space left at the ends of each board to accommodate for this, please see the expansion and contraction chart on page 2 of the installation manual.

To control the expansion and contraction of the deck boards, one single screw (toe screw) is driven through a pre-drilled hole, at the approximate centre point of the board length, through the lower lip of each deck board. This equally pushes expansion to each end of the deck board.

To minimize visual gaps the use of one deck board installed perpendicular to the rest of the deck boards, called a breaker board, is recommended. Please see page 9 of the installation manual for descriptive instructions.

Pre-drill all holes when installing the Aura™ deck boards and accessories.

Slot all holes identified in the install guide, to allow for the movement caused by expansion and contraction.

No. Aura™ is strictly a top decking material used for outdoor applications only.

Aura™ recommends placing the hot tub on the lumber substructure itself, to avoid any expansion and contraction issues.

Yes, you can install over an existing deck, just make sure the boards under are structurally sound and are not rotting to the point that the lumber boards might break.

Aura™ recommends 10″ on centre joist application for angled decking.

No. Surface mounting anything into the decking surface is not a good idea. This is because screwing through the deck boards more than once will restrict expansion and contraction and can cause cracking or breakage of the deck board. It is best to mount any railing posts to the lumber substructure below and cut out notches in the board surrounding the post.

When cutting Aura™, you want to make sure that your cuts are fast. It should not take longer than a second to cut through a deck board. Bring your blade to full speed, use a blade with the least amount of teeth possible, cut quickly and use a lubricant like Pam cooking spray or WD-40 for a smoother cut.

To make slotted holes, you can use a rotary tool with a spiral bit or a regular drill. Use a 3/16″ bit in diameter. You can also drill a hole and another hole right next to it, then connect the two to create a slotted hole.

Certain glues or adhesives can be used with Aura™ material for cosmetic purposes only and not structural purposes.

  • ABS Cement dissolves the plastic slightly to create a bond, so any spills on the decking should be wiped up immediately.
  • PL9000 Construction Adhesive is a thick paste that works well to close any small gaps.
  • You can use any polyurethane based adhesive that are intended for polystyrene or ABS.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, you should purchase all your material at once, especially when it comes to the deck boards and bullnose boards.

Manufacturing processes are more expensive and the premium resin material itself comes at a higher cost than wood. However, as time passes the amount of money saved just by not requiring sanding, painting, staining or replacing deck boards will exceed the initial monies spent on an Aura™ deck.

Yes, Aura™ decking is manufactured with a colour tolerance, to allow for slight colour variations within a purchased set of decking material. Aura™ colours and products are designed to weather naturally, retaining their original colour with small variations in shade from piece to piece.
We recommend that you randomize any slight colour variation that may exist within your deck boards, by laying them out in the order you would like them to be installed.

Aura™ decking comes with a 25-year limited warranty. The product is rot and water resistant, will not splinter, crack or check and is otherwise free from defects in material and workmanship.

Aura™ decking does not get any warmer to the touch, than a regular stained wood deck. Due to the property of the material, if you hose the deck down, the boards will actually hold the cool for an extended period of time.

– Deck board: 5 ½ inches
– Ultraclip: ¼ inch
– Combined: 5 ¾ inches

– Deck board: 1.15 lbs per foot
– Bullnose: 1.40 lbs per foot

No, the deck board has very good traction wet and dry. The textured surface of the deck board reduces slippage commonly found on painted wood decks. The surface is surprisingly tacky in bare feet or shoes, wet or dry.

Aura™ material is virtually impervious to water, including salt water. Mold is less likely to be a problem with Aura™ because there are no natural wood fibers. This makes Aura™ ideal for docks and around pools and spas. It should be noted however, that mold will appear almost anywhere under moist, damp conditions. Mold can easily be washed off and will not damage Aura™.

Yes, Aura™ is 100% recyclable. It is an eco-friendly product, which can be recycled at privately managed polystyrene recycling companies and at our facility in Mississauga, ON.

Care & maintenance

Aura™ Decking products are made to perform against the natural elements outdoors and weather beautifully over the years. No staining, sanding or painting required.

A simple spray from your garden hose will remove loose dirt and debris from your deck. A wash with warm water and mild dish soap once in a while will keep your deck looking great. Use a squeegee to remove excess water to reduce the chance of water marks, especially where hard water is an issue. Please do not use any kind of solvent on Aura™ decking.

Note: petroleum based products should not be used on Aura™ decking material.

Yes, Aura™ readily accepts acrylic paint. However, due to the incredible appearance and characteristics of the product, paint is not required. Do not use oil based stains due to the nature of thermoplastic material.

Please note that should you choose to paint your Aura™ Deck, your warranty will become null and void.

Surface scratches will disappear as your deck weathers to a matte finish in the first year. If you should encounter a deep scratch you can do the following: Minor scratches and abrasions can be repaired by gently rubbing the affected area with fine steel wool, then buffing with a bit of WD-40 on a clean cloth. Heavier scratches may be filled using a common furniture scratch repair pencil that closely resembles your Aura™ Decking colour. Examples include ‘Paint Pal Putty Pencil’ and ‘Minwax – Blend-Fil’ pencil. Please practice these techniques on an Aura™ sample before attempting repairs on your finished product.

Please note that this tactic can minimize the look of the scratch but it will not remove the scratch entirely.

Aura™ is a closed-cell product and does not absorb moisture. If anything spills on your deck and is wiped up right away it will not stain. The use of a mat under your grill is a good idea. Please do not use a rubber backed mat; rather use one that has an acrylic backing or a natural fiber backing. When using a grill on your Aura™ deck please allow at least 1’ spacing between your open lid and your Aura™ railing.

Aura™ does not recommend using a power washer on our decking, because the force of the power washer may damage the decking itself. Should you decide to use a power washer, use the absolute lowest possible setting and maintain consistent movement at all times.

Damage caused by a power washer will not be covered under warranty.

Yes you can. Ice melter and salt will not damage the material. However please be aware that it can scratch the material if you drag the crystals under a heavy object on the surface of the decking.
